Believe it or not, I don't like hyperbole. After 30 years of trawling through the bottom levels of the sea of cinema--including sitting through student films, unreleased movies, and even taking part in a couple of deservedly ill-fated productions--I have come to believe that "the worst movie ever made" is not one that the general public will ever get a chance to see.
I've also come to the conclusion that people who throw around phrases like "worst movie ever" or "worst director ever" have not spent enough time watching bad movies. They are usually either ignoramuses who are parroting someone who was mindlessly parroting Michael Medved, or self-important boobs trying to prop up shallow reviewing credentials by taking shots at what they perceive as easy targets. These folks will most commonly bring up Charles Band, Uwe Boll, David DeCoteau, Jess Franco, or Edward D. Wood, Jr.
While all of those gentlemen's names do indeed appear on some truly craptacular movies, few of them have actually been responsible for anything approaching "worst movie ever" status.
Although they've come close.
Next time, you run across someone who is slandering the work of a director or a film you like (even if you would never admit it to you more high-brow friends) with the "worst director ever" or "worst movie ever" ask them if they've seen any of the movies on the following list (click on the links to read write-ups at the Movies You (Should Die Before You) See blog):
Carnage Road (2000)
Castle of Fu Manchu (1969)
Gypsy Vampire: The Final Bloodlust (2009)
The Killer Eye (1998)
Night Fright (1967)
Satan's School for Lust (2002)
She-Gods of Shark Reef (1957)
If they haven't seen any of these movies, they are not qualified to toss around the label "worst movie ever" or "worst director ever" unless they admit that they are applying their obviously limited frame of reference to the topic. In fact, I wouldn't trust the judgment of anyone who hasn't seen at least two of the movies off that list.
